December 2, El Fasher — The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bombed Zamzam camp for internally displaced people in North Darfur with long-range missiles on Sunday. A number of civilians were killed and injured and thousands were forced to flee.
Zamzam camp, located 15km south of El Fasher, hosts around 2 million people, many who have been displaced many times in Sudan. Zamzam has been pushed into famine by the war. Its population has massively increased in the last few months as fighting in El Fasher intensified. The RSF are fighting to take over El Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the region.
The governor of Darfur, Mini Arko Minawi, condemned the attack on X and implicated the United Nations.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the missile attack by the Rapid Support Forces on Zamzam camp for the displaced, an area that has become the only refuge for the people of Darfur from all directions,” Minawi said. “What saddens me even more is that these gangs are supported by countries that are members of the United Nations. The United Nations must have its say now.”
The camp’s civil leader, Ibrahim Abduallah, told Darfur24 that the RSF attack on the camp set a dangerous precedent. He called on international and human rights organization to monitor the violations committed by warring parties on civilians fleeing from El Fasher to Zamzam.
