December 1, Tawila — Local sources in the town of Tawila, 60 km west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, told Darfur24 that commercial convoys coming from Tawila were stopped by an armed group with combat vehicles loyal to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The road is a vital route for families fleeing the violence in El Fasher, and is also used to transport humanitarian aid to Zamzam camp for internally displaced people. The RSF is still fighting intensely to takeover the city, the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the region, who alongside its allies are trying to defend the territory.
This was allegedly after an attempted attack by the same group on humanitarian convoys that were on their way to Zamzam on Friday. The group is allegedly planning to set up a base on the road linking Um-Jalbagh and Kuolagi.
Sources said that the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid Nour, sent a patrol consisting of combat vehicles to the road, which prompted the armed group to withdraw. Last week, sources within the RSF accused influential parties within the Sudan Liberation Movement of using the Tawila-El Fasher road to supply the SAF with fuel.
There were clashes on Friday between armed militias loyal to the RSF and the Sudan Liberation Movement forces. The Sudan Liberation Movement arrested RSF members and took them to Tawila, which remains under their control.
