November 25, Nairobi — There have been 469 incidents of violence against, or obstruction of, health care in Sudan since the war began in April 2023 and September 2024. 110 health workers have been killed.
Insecurity Insight, which examines threats facing people living and working in dangerous environments, said in a report published by the United Nations that dozens of health care workers have been injured, and at least six kidnapped. Health facilities have been damaged over 120 times.
Additionally, the UN documented 11 incidents of violence in November. These included the Saudi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, being hit in shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In Gezira state, Al-Tandub Hospital was looted by the RSF, including medical equipment, solar panels and the central hospital generator. In Al Hilaliya city the hospital was looted and destroyed during an attack by the area on the RSF. Health workers were prevented from treating the injured and nurses were being threatened with being killed.
In Nyala city, South Darfur state, a women’s and maternity hospital was hit by RSF bombing. In Khartoum, multiple hospitals were looted by the RSF and a doctor was arrested and taken to an unknown location.
The report comes as Sudan is experiencing an escalating cholera outbreak. About 28,400 confirmed cases of cholera and 836 associated deaths have been reported, the UN said last week, creating further challenges in public health.
