October 6, Port Sudan — A plane carrying 1.4 million doses of oral cholera vaccines arrived from the United Nations in Port Sudan early on Sunday morning.
Since the current outbreak began this July, over 18,000 cases of cholera and approximately 550 deaths have been reported in 10 states across the country.
Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim said in a press statement that the cholera vaccine will be distributed to the states of Kassala, Gedaref and River Nile as a first phase. He pledged to continue the ministry’s efforts to provide vaccines to the rest of the areas affected by the epidemic.
The Emergency Operations Center revealed that 562 new cholera cases were recorded on Thursday and Friday, including 11 deaths. Over 170 new cases of dengue fever were announced on Thursday and Friday in Kassala and Khartoum.
