October 2, Zalingei — Eight trucks belonging to the World Food Organization and the United Nations arrived in Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur State, loaded with food supplies on their way to the Jebel Marra areas, marking the first aid to reach the region since the outbreak of the war.

A UN source who preferred to remain anonymous told Darfur24 that the aid consists of food supplies such as flour, cooking oil, lentils and sugar, in addition to therapeutic food. Five of the trucks were from the UN, sufficient for 1800 children for the next three months.

On Wednesday, the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps said that famine and malnutrition have spread in displacement camps in Darfur, which has led to the death of hundreds among children, women and the elderly.
