October 1, Khartoum — The execution of dozens of civilians by gunmen affiliated with the Sudanese Army in Khartoum has been widely condemned by political and human rights forces, who considered it a “blatant violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and amounts to crimes against humanity.”

In a statement, the Emergency Lawyers human rights group said it had confirmed information indicating that civilians were executed by forces from Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade and members of the Sudanese Army in the Al-Halfaia area in Bahri on Sunday, September 29. The statement also said that violations have included arbitrary arrests, based on ethnic and regional grounds, “and all cases were under the pretext of cooperating with the Rapid Support Forces.”

The Coordination of Civil and Democratic Forces, known as Taqaadum, said that the initial information available so far showed that civilians were killed through extrajudicial executions. It said that video clips circulated on social media showed groups fighting on the side of the Sudanese Army announcing, after entering the Halfaya area in Khartoum Bahri, the killing of civilians outside the law.

“Those who believe that pushing the country into an all-out civil war will make them safe from its evils and enable them to rule the country again with an iron fist, do not know that they will be its victims sooner or later and history will pursue them with its curses,” the group said in a statement.
