September 30, Port Sudan — The army leadership has taken executive steps to transfer the temporary capital from Port Sudan to Atbara in the River Nile State in northern Sudan, two government sources told Darfur24 on Monday.
An employee at the Ministry of Federal Governance told Darfur 24 that Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had approved the proposal to gradually transfer the Temporary Capital from the east coast to Atbara. The first phase of transfers will include the ministries of education, transportation and minerals, followed by the rest.
The River Nile State is considered a major stronghold for most Army Leaders and officers.
Most government institutions, including the Army Command and the Sovereignty Council, moved to Port Sudan, located on the sea coast where the country’s main ports are situated, after the outbreak of war in April 2023.
An employee in the River Nile State Government told Darfur24 that maintenance and renovation works are being carried out on the Headquarters of the Sudan Railways Corporation and the Nile Valley University in Atbara, in preparation for the transfer. He confirmed the continuation of maintenance and expansion on the Atbara Airport runway and the construction of passenger lounges, in order to prepare it to receive local and international flights.
