September 26, Nyala — The family of Faroug Khater, 58, who is detained by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, South Darfur, demanded his immediate release or a fair trial after a month of detainment.

Faroug is a university professor and co-founder of the Savannah College in Nyala. He has no known connections with political or military parties.

A member of his family, Mohamed Abdel Rahman Ahmed, told Darfur24 that Faroug was arrested from his home in the Al-Saad Al-Aaliy area in August by an armed force affiliated with the RSF and was released a day later after being forced to pay a sum of money.

Faroug was arrested for the second time less than 24 hours later and taken to RSF detention centers on charges of supporting and financing the Sudanese army with money and communicating with its leaders in the city of Daba. He remains in detention.

The RSF are detaining dozens of civilians in special detention centers on a number of charges, including cooperation and coordination with the Sudanese army.
