September 24, El Fasher — Hundreds of families fled from El Fasher city to Zamzam camp for the displaced, due to the fierce fighting in the city between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting has caused “appalling” levels of suffering for the civilian population, the United Nations recently said.

A volunteer in the emergency rooms in Zamzam camp, Muhammad Abdul-Rahman Muhammad, told Darfur 24 that 150 families arrived at the camp after recent battles this month and are being hosted in temporary shelters.

The International Organization for Migration’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) reported in July that about 328,000 people had been displaced from El Fasher due to the fighting that has been taking place in the city since May.

The fighting between the warring parties in El Fasher, the capital of Darfur region in the west of the country, has left more than 4,000 dead and wounded since the outbreak of fighting in the country, according to the state’s Ministry of Health. Famine in Zamzam camp, which hosts around half a million internally displaced people, has led to devastating conditions, with Médecins Sans Frontières reporting that “a child was dying in the Zamzam camp every two hours”.
