September 13, Nairobi — On Thursday, in a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Africa, Rep. John James, a democrat representative of Michigan, delivered an impassioned statement on the failings of the U.S. to respond to the situation in Sudan, and said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is committing genocide.
“As the war continues to unfold, an abundance of evidence points to a genocide being committed by the RSF,” James said. “The Sudanese get crickets from this administration who are doing nothing to fix that problem. Trying our best isn’t going to bring back those lives, we must do better.”
On Thursday, U.S. Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove discussed the need for the Biden administration to increase its humanitarian aid to Sudan. “If we are not taking the lead on this then it will signal to the rest of the world that this is not important,” she said.
Last month, Kamlager-Dove led 50 lawmakers in urging the administration to scale up aid. The lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and USAID Administrator Samantha Power.
“The lack of international attention has obscured a horrific reality: the war in Sudan is the largest humanitarian disaster in the world today,” wrote the lawmakers.
