September 12, Nairobi — The United Nations Security Council adopted a draft resolution on Wednesday that extends the sanctions on Sudan until September 2025.
The resolution extended the sanctions regime, including targeted sanctions such as asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo, until 12 September 2025.
The sanctions, however are timely solely at Darfur, and do not apply to the whole country. Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, said the decision was a “missed opportunity” by the Council to extend the embargo to the whole of Sudan.
Many at the security council pointed fingers at the UAE, who are accused of sending arms to the RSF.
“There’s irrefutable evidence that this war that we are experiencing is a result of the support of the UAE for militias that are committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur,” said Sudan’s representative, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed.
