September 3, Kassala — On Monday, massive crowds attended the funeral procession of 25-year-old Al-Amin Mohamed Nour, who was allegedly tortured to death inside the security and intelligence apparatus’ detention centers in the city of Kassala, eastern Sudan.
Videos posted on social media platforms showed huge crowds attending the funeral procession after the authorities responded to pressure and arrested five people who were involved in his torture and murder.
The Bani Amer and Al-Habab Youth Gathering in Kassala State, a local group, announced that the Public Prosecution had begun initial investigations with five suspects, including one officer.
The killing had sparked anger in Kassala, and on Sunday demonstrations blocked the roads surrounding the security service headquarters. Security forces had fired shots to disperse protestors.
In a statement, Emergency Lawyers, a human rights group, said that Al-Amin was “subjected to brutal methods of torture that ended with his cold-blooded murder under the pretext of his alleged cooperation with the Rapid Support Forces, without providing any evidence or correct legal procedures that guarantee his right to a fair trial.”
