September 3, Nyala — Four patients at Nyala Dialysis Center in South Darfur state have died recently, and there is a severe lack of supplies in the hospital, the director, Hamid Musa, told Darfur24.
Nyala is Sudan’s second largest city and was captured by the Rapid Support Forces last October.
Now, dialysis Patients are forced to try and find medication at the market and buy fuel for the center’s generations to keep the electricity running. They called on the National Center for Kidney Diseases at the Sudanese Ministry of Health to expedite supplies to Nyala to keep them alive.
“If the fuel runs out, we have nothing we can do and we have to leave it to the patients to buy fuel to start their dialysis operations,” Hamid told Darfur24.
In mid-August, the center ran out of dialysis connections, which it previously provided for free. Now, Hamid told Darfur24 that patients are buying a single connection at private pharmacies at prices up to 50,000 Sudanese pounds.
He submitted a report to the Ministry of Health and the National Center for Kidney Diseases early last July, which included details on the state of supplies.
Hamed said that the state Ministry of Finance has committed to providing a barrel of diesel weekly for the electricity since last May, but during the past two weeks there has been a delay in receiving the fuel, and it has decreased to half a barrel. He also said the center will face water problems after their tanks run out.
