September 3, El Fasher — Heavy rains that hit areas of North Darfur State on Saturday swept away the main road linking the city of El Fasher and the Zamzam camp for displaced persons. The rain also caused the collapse of hundreds of houses in the city, as well as a number of bridges and roads.
Ismail Adam Mohammed, a resident of El Fasher, said that the road erosion “doubles the suffering” of citizens in North Darfur. He said that a number of areas are now isolated.
The area is already facing famine and ongoing fierce fighting. Around 500,000 people are at Zamzam camp, which is experiencing dire humanitarian conditions. Last month Darfur24 reported that at least five children had died in the camp due to malnutrition.
In the northern part of El Fasher, at least 3,000 shelters collapsed in the Abu Shouk camp due to the rain.
During this year’s rainy season — between June and September — Sudan has been affected by more than average rainfall.
