September 2, Abu Matariq — Three refugees from South Sudan died in a camp in East Darfur state in the last few days due to starvation, the chief told Darfur24.

The camp in Abu Matariq has over 6,600 refugees. They are suffering from a severe shortage of food, shelter, health and water — and are allegedly not receiving humanitarian aid.

Previously, violence and conflict in South Sudan displaced millions, and around 100,000 fled to East Darfur in Sudan. Now, they are facing the spread of disease and severe malnutrition as the conflict in Sudan continues. One refugee, Teresa Deng Chan, 70, died due to food shortages, a former official of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, Awar Dit, told Darfur24.

Abu Matariq is located approximately kilometers south of El Daein, the capital of East Darfur state.
