September 2, Zalingei — Four people were killed and dozens injured when an airstrike hit a camp for internally displaced people on Saturday night in Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur State.

This marks the first time that the Sudan army has bombed Zalingei since the outbreak of the conflict last April. Eyewitnesses told Darfur24 they saw army aircrafts strike the camp on Saturday night, which is hundreds of meters east of the Rapid Support Forces headquarters in Zalingei.

The situation in Zalingei has previously been described as catastrophic, with shortages of food and medicine. Displaced people have been sheltering in abandoned schools, banks, fire stations, and other camps across the city. The University of Zalingei, previously a center for students of medicine, agriculture, and technology, is now desolate.
