September 2, Port Sudan — On Sunday the Ministry of Health said the number of cholera cases had risen to 2,583 and the death toll to 98.
Over 230 new cases had been recorded in Gedaref and Kassala in southeastern Sudan. The UN Refugee Agency noted these areas of particular concern last week as they are sheltering thousands of displaced Sudanese.
The recent cholera outbreak resurged after several weeks of heavy rainfall and flooding. This is further by dire humanitarian conditions, including overcrowded camps and limited supply to health services.
A cholera vaccination campaign launched in late August in eastern Sudan, but the vaccines quickly ran out.
