August 28, Nairobi — The U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, revealed new details about the Geneva talks on Tuesday, in a broadcast with Darfur24.

The U.S. led talks were hoping to negotiate a ceasefire and improve access to humanitarian aid across Sudan.

The talks concluded last week, and were attended by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) but the Sudanese army was notably absent. Perriello said that discussions around ending the conflict were difficult given that the Sudanese army wasn’t there, but that they were communicating with them “hour by hour.”

Perriello stressed that the alliance — including the African Union, United Nations, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and Egypt — established after Geneva talks is not military but diplomatic, with the purpose of working on a ceasefire in Sudan. He praised the alliance’s work in enabling the deliverey of humanitarian aid, including the opening of the Adre crossing.

Perriello said that the RSF are preparing a code of conduct which will include orders from the senior leadership, noting that this came in accordance with the request of Sudanese women who spoke about the horrors of sexual slavery.
