August 27, Port Sudan — On Monday, surging waters burst through a dam, wiping out at least 20 villages and killing at least 30 people in eastern Sudan, the United Nations said on Monday. Many are unaccounted for and stuck in villages in the mountains without food or medicine, local sources told Darfur24.

Reports said electricity and water pipes had been destroyed.

Since the start of June over 30,000 people have been affected by heavy rains and flooding in eastern Sudan. Hundreds have been left homeless.

The Sudanese Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces, Tagaddum, warned of the seriousness of the situation as it coincided with the spread of the cholera epidemic. They demanded further information into what caused the Arbaat Dam to collapse.

Official authorities have not yet commented on the damage caused by the floods, but the Federal Ministry of Health said that there have been 132 deaths due to the rains since the start of autumn. On Monday they announced that ten states had been affected by the regions with nearly 130,000 affected by the rains. Nearly 12,500 homes have collapsed.
