August 22, Adre — One hundred trucks loaded with food and medical supplies from UNICEF and the World Food Program have arrived at the Adre border crossing, on their way to camps for internally displaced persons in North, South and Central Darfur.
On August 16, Sudan’s sovereign council announced that the border crossing from Chad into Sudan was to be opened after being closed for six months. IDPs fleeing the fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in Darfur are facing severe humanitarian conditions, due to the lack of medicine, food and shelter.
A Sudanese government employee working for the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) told Darfur24 that the aid that arrived at the crossing is intended to help IDPs but heavy rains and rough roads may delay its arrival on time.
The heavy rains in Darfur in the past few days led to the collapse of the Kaga bridge in the city of El Geneina, which connects the road from Adre to North Darfur State, as well as the Bari bridge in the Mornei area, which connects the Adre border crossing to the states of South, East and Central Darfur.
