Port Sudan — The Sudanese Sovereignty Council said on Sunday that it had decided to send a delegation to the Egyptian capital Cairo to discuss the government’s vision for implementing the Jeddah Agreement.
In May 2023, Sudan’s warring signed a commitment in Jeddah to protect civilians in the conflict but did not reach a ceasefire. Talks resumed in Saudi Arabia last October and faltered again.
Last week, the Sudanese army boycotted U.S.-mediated talks in Switzerland which were aimed at reaching a ceasefire deal and delivering relief aid. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) participated in the talks.
In a statement obtained by Darfur24, the Sovereignty Council said that sending a delegation to Cairo was a result of contact with the U.S. government, represented by Tom Perriello, special envoy to Sudan, and the Egyptian government who requested a meeting.
On Saturday, Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said that the government had submitted its proposal and vision regarding the implementation of the Jeddah Agreement to Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and to U.S. envoy Perriello.
Abdel stated that the proposal includes the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces from Khartoum and the cities of Darfur and Al-Jazeera state.
