Khartoum — The commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan “Hemeti,” announced on Sunday that his forces will prevent the army from controlling the fate of the Sudanese people.
“We are committed to negotiation as a basic and strategic principle to achieve stability in our country, and therefore we have responded to all regional and international initiatives that aim to stop the war” Hemeti wrote on social media site X.
“On the other hand, we will not allow a mere group of terrified generals who fled the capital Khartoum to control the fate of our people, and we will have many options that we are able to use whenever necessary,” he continued in his statement.
Hemeti said that Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the Sudanese army commander and “his gang” lack any real commitment to negotiation or to working for the future of Sudan.
Last week, the Sudanese army refused to attend Geneva negotiations, citing RSF’s reluctance to adhere to Jeddah talks outcomes. Hemeti called out the army for not attending the talks in his post.
“The Port Sudan gang is primarily focused on preserving its privileges and private interests, which are inseparable from the interests of the old regime, which bequeathed us wars, displacement and asylum,” Hemeti wrote.
On Saturday, Sudanese army commander al-Burhan said that the government had submitted its proposal and vision regarding the implementation of the Jeddah Agreement to Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello.
Al-Burhan stated that the proposal includes the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from Khartoum and the cities of the Darfur region and Al-Jazeera state.
