Al Fasher , August 5(Darfur24)The United Nations World Food Program( WFP) said on Monday that it needs safe access to send aid to Zamzam IDP camp in the vicinity of Al Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur State.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) famine review committee announced on Thursday, August 1, that a famine had occurred in the Zamzam camp for displaced people in North Darfur, likely to continue until at least next October.
WFP said in a tweet on × platform that it “has food supplies ready to be sent immediately to Zamzam camp to help stop the famine, but we need safe and unhindered access.”
The United Nations Population Fund reported that it is stockpiling life-saving health supplies to deliver to Zamzam camp once access is granted.
It warned of a famine in 13 areas in Sudan, calling for the need to allow humanitarian aid to reach it immediately to save thousands of hungry people.
The Humanitarian Aid Commission denied the occurrence of famine in Zamzam camp, attributing the shortage of food and humanitarian aid to the siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces.
The Rapid Support Forces have been besieging El Fasher since last April, preventing food and medicine supplies from reaching it, in an attempt to control the city, which has witnessed clashes and artillery and air strikes since May 10, 2024.
