Al-Geneina, August 5(Darfur24)The head of the civil administration in West Darfur, Tijani Al-Tahir Karshom, announced that the state capital, Al-Geneina, is a disaster city and a disaster area due to the floods and torrents that led to the collapse of 7,000 houses.
The heavy rains that Al-Geneina city is witnessing these days have led to torrents and floods due to the high levels of Wadi Kaja.
The head of the civil administration said, while inspecting the areas affected by the rains and torrents, that what Al-Geneina is witnessing is a major disaster that is beyond our capabilities, adding that “the heavy rains led to the complete collapse of 5,000 houses, while 2,000 houses were partially affected in the residential neighborhoods adjacent to Wadi Kaja.
He announced that Al-Geneina has become a disaster city and a disaster area due to the heavy rains during the past days, and indicated that the most affected areas are Al-Zahour neighborhood, Umm Duwin administrative unit, and Ardamata area.
Karshom stated that citizens are now on the streets and need food and shelter supplies, calling on foreign organizations, United Nations agencies, philanthropists and sectors of society to move to contribute and support those in need.
