El Geneina, August 5(Darfur24)6 people drowned in separate incidents in Wadi Kaja in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State.
The heavy rains witnessed by West Darfur State led to an unprecedented rise in water levels in Wadi Kaja, which passes through the center of El Geneina and flows into Lake Shari in Chad.
Eyewitnesses told Darfur24 that 6 people from different areas drowned in Wadi Kaja during the past two weeks.
Eyewitnesses said that most of them were swimming, but the torrential waters led to their drowning.
For his part, the Darfur24 correspondent reported that swimmers were unable to find 4 bodies due to the high water levels and the speed of the current, and that attempts to search for them are still ongoing.
In this regard, the Executive Director of Al-Geneina Locality, Issa Hamad, said in statements to “Darfur 24” that the flooding of Wadi Kaja led to the complete collapse of more than 25 houses in the Ardamata area, and indicated that the rise in water levels will lead to a greater flood.
He called on foreign organizations to intervene urgently to provide assistance to families who have become homeless.
