Golo, August 3(Darfur24)
A UN delegation arrived in the Jebel Marra areas, which are controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Muhammad to assess the humanitarian situation there.
The delegation is headed by the UN agencies coordinator, Mohamed Khano, accompanied by a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and representatives of international and national organizations operating in the region.
Mohamed Khano said that the purpose of the visit is to assess the humanitarian situation in the region and to identify the needs of the displaced people in all the areas.
Khano indicated that the UN delegation will also be visiting the various IDP shelters in the area , then they will be heading to Tawila and, after that to Darbat in eastern Jebel Marra.
This visit comes after a similar visitation by the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the United Nations in Sudan, Toby Harward to JebelMarra, at the beginning of last month, where he checked on the conditions of the displaced people IDPs who fled the cities of Darfur due to the clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces RSF.
Tens of thousands have fled from different parts of Darfur, especially El Fasher, to the Jebel Marra area, where they are living in dire humanitarian conditions.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a multi-partner food security assessment initiative including the United Nations, has declared a famine in Zamzam IDP camp near El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.
Famine conditions are feared to be widespread in 171 IDP camps in Darfur.
