The Ministry of Health in South Darfur State received, on Tuesday, trucks loaded with therapeutic food for malnourished children.

The trucks’ load amounted to 4,000 cartons provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Director General of the State Ministry of Health, Abbas Hassan Shams El-Din, told Darfur 24 that “a convoy of trucks carrying 4,000 cartons of therapeutic food for children provided by UNICEF has arrived in Nyala.”

He expected a truck loaded with emergency medicines from the World Health Organization to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday.

He added: “The quantities that have arrived will contribute to reducing the suffering of children, and the distribution of therapeutic food to the centers will begin according to the plan of partnership between the Ministry of Health and organizations working in the field of nutrition, and health centers, while rural hospitals will be provided with emergency medicines.”

South Darfur State witnessed a lack of therapeutic biscuits for malnourished children for more than a month, which had a negative impact on the health of kids receiving treatment at internal and external nutrition centers in the state and camps for the displaced.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health praised the efforts of UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and all partner organizations and the support of the Ministry of Health, especially in light of the current circumstances that the country is going through.

Shams El-Din said that his ministry received a vehicle loaded with emergency medicines from UNICEF last week.

For her part, the Director of the Nutrition Department at the Ministry of Health, Howaida Abdullah, expressed her happiness with the arrival of the therapeutic supply for malnourished children after a halt of more than a month.

Howaida told “Darfur 24” that the number of malnourished children is very large, as a schedule has been developed in coordination with partners to distribute treatment to the centers.

She added: “We have 52 centers for treating children, and with this quantity that has arrived, we are planning to open new centers.”
