El Fasher, July 26(Darfur24)

Dozens of detainees, most of them children, escaped on Wednesday from detention centers affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces( RSF) east of El Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur.

Military sources revealed that the escape took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, coinciding with the rainfall. It was clear that the majority of the detainees who escaped were children, while these sources did not mention the circumstances of the incident.

According to a number of escapees who told “Darfur24”, they were able to escape after they were sure that the detention center was not guarded.

One of the escapees told “Darfur24” that he was taken from the Inqaz neighborhood last June, coinciding with his return to check on their home, before he was able to escape with a large group of detainees.

He added that the number of those who escaped from the center is about 34 prisoners who were arrested from the southeastern neighborhoods of El Fasher at different times after the situation exploded on May 10.

Previous detainees who were released from the Rapid Support Forces prisons east of the city, who were interviewed by “Darfur 24” in June, warned of an unknown fate facing the detainees due to the exchange of fire between the warring parties and the continuous aerial bombardment by the Sudanese Air Force of the Rapid Support Forces gatherings in El Fasher.
