Port Sudan , July 21(Darfur 24)

On Sunday, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Army Commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received the credentials of Iranian Ambassador Hassan Shah Hosseini as his country’s Ambassador and Plenipotentiary Extraordinary to Sudan.

The move comes after an 8-year diplomatic rupture, when deposed President Omar al-Bashir cut ties with Iran, beginning a rapprochement with Saudi Arabia that prompted him to involve Sudanese forces in a Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Hassan Al-Amin said, in a press statement, that the Iranian ambassador presented his credentials to the head of the Sovereignty Council, which is the new ambassador of the Islamic Republic to his country.

The ambassador’s submission of his credentials was considered a sign of the beginning of a new phase in the process of bilateral relations between the two countries.

For his part, the Iranian ambassador said that submitting his credentials comes within the framework of the common consensus between the two countries regarding the exchange of ambassadors and the promotion of bilateral relations.

He pledged to do his utmost to strengthen cooperation relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Sudan, stressing that his country supports national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Sudan.

The former foreign minister-designate, Ali Al-Sadiq, was able to make a breakthrough in relations between the two countries, months after the outbreak of the conflict.

Press reports talk about Iran providing military support to the army in the war it is waging against the Rapid Support Forces.

Al-Burhan met with the Sudanese ambassadors to South Sudan and Iran, Issam Karar and Abdulaziz Hassan Saleh, on the occasion of their farewell to assume their duties.
