The Civil Defense Forces in the Red Sea state in eastern Sudan said on Saturday that a fire broke out in a residential building in the city of Port Sudan, killing 9 people.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, Port Sudan has witnessed significant population overcrowding, with hundreds of thousands displaced from war zones. It has also become an administrative capital in which state institutions are located, including the Sovereignty Council and the Army Command.
Director of the Red Sea State Civil Defense Forces, Police Brigadier General Ahmed Mohamed Hamidan, said in a press statement that a fire broke out in a residential building in the Salalab neighborhood, with the number of victims reaching 9 people.
It was believed that the cause of the huge fire in the residential building was an electrical short circuit, which led to the building catching fire immediately.
He pointed out that the civil defense team carried out rescue, suppression and cooling operations immediately after receiving the report. They were able to evacuate and rescue a number of residents stranded and trapped on the ground floor with the valor and professionalism of the team, and the necessary emergency services were provided to them at the accident hospital and the doctors hospital. They left the hospital after four of them were detained in stable condition.
The Director of the Civil Defense Forces in the state recorded a field and inspection visit to the scene of the accident.
