Mellit , July 18(Darfur 24)

Commercial trucks coming from Libya to the city of Mellit in North Darfur have ceased, leading to an increase in the prices of food commodities and fuel.

A number of merchants revealed that trade between the two countries was affected due to the recent security unrest and the battles that the area witnessed between the Rapid Support Forces and the armed movements, as trucks transporting basic goods stopped with the increasing flow of displaced people from the affected areas to the city.

The merchant in the Mellit market, Ibrahim Othman Muhammad, pointed out that the city of Mellit is considered the main port of Darfur to receive cars coming from Libya and the northern state.

He stated that the price of a bag of sugar rose from 95,000 to 115,000 Sudanese pounds, the price of a 25-kg bag of flour from 25,000 to 60,000 pounds, and the price of a jar of oil from 35,000 to 60,000 pounds.

He added that the cessation of fuel trucks led to an increase in the price of a barrel of water to reach 3,500 pounds instead of 2,500 pounds, which increased the suffering of citizens and displaced people in the region.

For his part, one of the residents, Abdul Salam Abdul Qadir, confirmed to “Darfur 24” that there is a scarcity of job opportunities after the trucks stopped in the city and the absence of organizations working to support the displaced and citizens there, which increases the difficulties of life.

He said that the people and the displaced are working to confront this economic and humanitarian crisis with everything they have, appealing to international organizations for the need for additional support as urgently and as quickly as possible.
