Zalingei, July 16(Darfur 24)
The Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the United Nations in Sudan, Toby Harward, revealed efforts to establish a center in the city of Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, to follow up on the conditions of the displaced people IDPs in Jebel Marra and other displacement areas in Darfur.
Addressing representatives of IDPs in the city of Nertiti, west of Jebel Marra, last Sunday, Harward called on the parties to the armed conflict to cease fire and strive seriously to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the needy whose conditions have worsened and who are now threatened by hunger and disease, especially children, women and the elderly.
He stressed that they are in dire need of food, medicine and shelter materials, which requires the United Nations to reactivate its agencies and organizations in Darfur, Kordofan and other areas affected by the war in Sudan.
He stated that the United Nations did not stand idly by, but rather continued its negotiations with the parties to the conflict to protect citizens in Sudan and stop the war.
The UN official apologized on behalf of the United Nations to the displaced, refugees and Sudanese citizens who were distracted by the economic crisis, Corona, political problems in Western countries, and the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, which diverted donor budgets from Sudan.
He explained that the United Nations was working to change its activities from emergency to sustainable solutions to help the displaced return to their homes and encourage social cohesion among the tribal components in Darfur, but the outbreak of war between the army and the Rapid Support caused the project to be disrupted, and even worsened the situation and forced the employees of the United Nations agencies to leave. From Darfur and from all of Sudan.
He pointed out that the visit aimed to assess the situation on the ground and collect information to convince donors of the necessity of restoring United Nations activities in Darfur and Sudan.
For his part, the official spokesman for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees, Adam Rijal, said that the meeting that brought together the leaders of the displaced people in the Nertiti camps and the Native Administration, with the Deputy United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs for Sudan, Toby Harward, and his accompanying delegation in the southern camp for the displaced, was fruitful because it enabled the displaced people to deliver their messages. Related to the dire humanitarian situation in which they and the host communities live, in light of famine, food scarcity, and lack of life-saving medicines.
He pointed out that the displaced people demanded the speedy provision of food, medicine, shelter materials and drinking water to save the displaced people trapped by hunger, disease, cold and rain.
