Nyala, July 9(Darfur 24)

New statistics from the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees revealed an increase in the number of children suffering from malnutrition, amounting to (5,975) boys and girls, some of whom have reached critical conditions.

In its periodic bulletin, the coordination confirmed the continuing collapse of the humanitarian situation in the camp and the displacement camps spread in other Darfur cities.

She explained that the displaced people in Kalma camp have become trapped between the parties to the armed conflict, and are deprived of the most basic needs of food, medicine, shelter, and drinking water, due to restrictions imposed by both parties to the conflict and the obstruction of humanitarian aid reaching those in need.

The coordination confirmed that both sides of the conflict were using food and medicine as weapons to starve the displaced.

Last May, the head of the camps for the displaced in the Darfur region, Ishaq Muhammad Abdullah, announced that 66 children had died due to hunger in the Kalma camp for the displaced near the city of Nyala in South Darfur, noting the emergence of cases of paralysis among children in addition to other diseases as a result of missing vaccination for an entire year.

The statement indicated that 38 elderly people were killed within one month, in addition to multiple deaths among segments of society, including 6 among pregnant mothers due to lack of nutrition, explaining that the statistics are likely to rise in light of the current conditions of the displaced in the camps.
