Al-Merem, July 4(Darfur 2
The forces of the 92nd Brigade Command of the Sudanese Army in the town of Almeiram have withdrawn to the Majok area in South Sudan after clashes with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF ).
On Thursday, the Rapid Support Forces RSF announced their control of the “Al-Meiram” area in West Kordofan State, after a battle that lasted for two consecutive days, with army forces stationed in the 92nd Brigade in the region.
Sources from Al-Maerim told “Darfur 24” that the army forces in Al-Maerim withdrew with their equipment yesterday evening, Wednesday, to the Majok region in South Sudan, about 35 kilometers from Al-Maerim, after air coverage from the warplanes, which dropped approximately 20 explosive barrels near the city.
The sources added that the Rapid Support Forces entered the headquarters of the 92nd Brigade at 6 a.m. Thursday without any clashes, as they found the garrison empty of army personnel and military equipment.
For his part, a security source affiliated with the Sudanese army confirmed to “Darfur 24” the withdrawal of forces this morning from the command of the 92nd Al-Marim Brigade with all their equipment, saying that the withdrawal was tactical after the Rapid Support Forces inflicted heavy losses in lives and equipment.
He added, “Due to the army’s siege and its location in an area considered a social incubator for the Rapid Support Forces, the army was forced to withdraw.”
The Rapid Support Forces have been besieging the Al-Meiram area since the beginning of this week, while the Sudanese army said on Wednesday that it had repelled an attack by the Rapid Support Forces on the headquarters of the 92nd Brigade in the area.
The city of Al-Merem is located in the state of West Kordofan on the border with South Sudan, where the Rapid Support Forces now control the entire border from Kordofan to Darfur.
After the Rapid Support took control of Al-Meiram, the army’s presence diminished in the Heglig oil region and the city of Babanusa, which houses the headquarters of the 22nd Infantry Division, in addition to the city of Al-Nahud, where the headquarters of the 81st Brigade is located.
