El Fasher, July 3(Darfur 24)
Today, Tuesday the Saudi Specialized Hospital in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, received a number of dead and wounded civilians as a result of the clashes that the city witnessed today, according to medical sources.
Military battles were renewed in the city of El Fasher between the Sudanese army and its allied armed movements on the one hand and the Rapid Support Forces on the other hand.
An eyewitness, Muhammad Ahmed Farah, told “Darfur 24” that the city witnessed a violent battle in the southeastern part, and added that “the Rapid Support Forces responded with heavy artillery shelling towards the livestock market, Al-Radeef neighborhood, the vegetable market, and parts of Al-Thawra neighborhood in Al-Nas.”
He stated that the number of casualties was large after watching today’s bombing.
For his part, a medical source who preferred to withhold his identity confirmed to “Darfur 24” that the hospital was overcrowded with wounded people, including children and women, with severe injuries due to exposure to stray bullets and artillery shelling.
One of the citizens told “Darfur 24” that today’s battles are the fiercest in a month, and cannons were used extensively, in addition to direct confrontations in the southeastern part.
More than 60% of the population of El Fasher city left after the battles intensified and hospitals went out of service, according to the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullah Khater.
According to international organizations, 2,000 people were killed and injured, and about 143,000 people were displaced from the city of El Fasher.
The Rapid Support Forces control large parts of the eastern and northern sides of the city of El Fasher, while the Sudanese army and the armed movement forces allied with it control large parts of the southern part, the center and west of the city, and parts of the north of the city.
The Rapid Support Forces are trying to control the last strongholds of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region after taking control of the states of “South-West-Central-East” Darfur through the siege it has imposed on the city of El Fasher since last April.
