Port Sudan, June 22(Darfur 24)

On Saturday, the Coordination-body of Democratic and civil Forces “Taqaddum” welcomed the decisions of the African Union Peace and Security Council.

On Friday, the African Peace and Security Council decided to establish a high-level presidential mechanism led by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who chairs the current session of the Security and Peace Council, to work on arranging a direct meeting between the army command and the Rapid Support Forces to negotiate a ceasefire.

In a statement obtained by “Darfur 24”, the progress of the Security and Peace Council’s resolutions was considered “a qualitative leap in raising the level of response of the leaders of the African continent to the catastrophe of war in Sudan, which constitutes the largest humanitarian tragedy in the entire world now, and whose impact is not limited to the country’s borders only, but also threatens Its external surroundings are taken seriously.”

Taggadum praised the Council’s call on both sides of the fighting to immediately stop hostilities and its condemnation of all horrific violations committed against civilians.

It stated that it added its voice to warn the African Peace and Security Council of the dangers of the war taking on ethnic and regional dimensions.

The Council stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict, as the only way out is a peaceful, negotiated solution. It also called on international and regional powers to fulfill their pledges to provide the necessary resources for humanitarian aid.

Tagaadum praised the Council’s attention to the need to find effective mechanisms to protect civilians, and also praised its call to convene an emergency African summit dedicated to Sudan.

Taqadum stressed the importance of the role of the African Union in ending the conflict in Sudan, and stressed the importance of not backing down from the Union’s position of suspending Sudan’s membership due to the absence of a legitimate authority there after the military coup on October 25, 2021.

Tagaddum added: “The war has deepened the crisis of legitimacy, and none of its parties should be rewarded by granting them legitimacy that was not granted to them by the Sudanese people who were engulfed in the flames of war.”

Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan stipulated accepting the African Union’s solutions to the ongoing conflict by lifting the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the Union.
