El Fasher , May 13 (Darfur 24)

A medical source at Abu Shouk IDP camp health center, north of El Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur state, said that the indiscriminate artillery shelling on Sunday, claimed the lives of 5 people and wounded 23, including 15 children.

Clashes have been taking place between the Sudanese army, the armed movements allied with it on one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces, since Friday, in the city of El Fasher, which shelters hundreds of thousands of displaced people who fled to it from other conflict-hit areas in Darfur.

The medical source told Darfur 24 on Monday that the artillery shelling and random shooting left a large number of casualties.

The source stressed that the positioning of the Rapid Support Forces in the eastern and northern sides of the camp, and the concentration of the army and armed movements in the south and west of the camp, made the task of evacuating the wounded, civilians, and women to safe places difficult.

According to the wounded were transported by carts and animals to the center and transferred to the Southern El Fasher Hospital, which led to the casualties losing their lives due to severe bleeding and lack of rapid medical intervention.

The source called on the state Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to provide an ambulance for the camp’s population of more than 40,000 people.

The Ministry of Health in North Darfur is seeking to relieve pressure on the Southern Hospital, which is the only one operating in the city, by distributing cases to health centers.

The civil official in Abchuck camp, Issa Yusuf Issa, appealed to the warring parties to move away from the camp, open safe corridors for civilians, remove the outposts around Naivasha and Ibchuck market, and not enter the camp to fight among women and children.

Issa told “Darfur 24” that more than 50 people were killed and more than 200 people were injured, most of them children and women.

He revealed the incursion of the Rapid Support into the northern and eastern side of the camp and the entry of the army and movements towards the southern and western part, which made it difficult for civilians to move to parts of the city.

According to a preliminary toll, the battles taking place in El Fasher resulted in the deaths of 38 people and the injury of 189 others, according to the El Fasher City Emergency Committee. The Babiker Nahar Children’s Hospital was also evacuated after an aerial bombardment near it, which led to the death of two children and a health care provider.
