Port Sudan, May 11 ( Darfur 24)

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkwita Salami, said that months of escalating violence in El Fasher has hindered the flow of aid and basic goods, pushing its population to the brink of famine.

Yesterday, Friday, the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, witnessed violent battles between the army and armed movements on the one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces and their allied militias on the other hand, shortly after the military mobilization.

Clementine Nkweta Salami said, in a statement obtained by Darfur 24, on Saturday: It is deeply concerned about the outbreak of clashes in El Fasher despite repeated calls for the parties to the conflict to refrain from attacking the city.

She stressed that violence threatens the lives of more than 800,000 civilians residing in El Fasher.

Salami expressed her concern about reports of the use of heavy weapons and attacks in densely populated areas in the city center and the outskirts of El Fasher, resulting in many casualties.

She added: “It is heartbreaking to see this nightmare unfold, as the conflict continues to spread to large parts of the country. Once again, civilians – men, women and children, most preciously – pay with their lives. “This must stop.”

It called on all parties involved in the fighting to fulfill their obligations under international law to protect civilians and stop the fighting.
