New York, May 11 (Darfur 24)
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said that the people of Darfur need food, not fighting.
Yesterday, Friday, the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, witnessed violent clashes between the army and armed movements on one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces and their allied militias on the other hand.
Martin Griffiths said in a tweet on the X platform, “The fires of war in Sudan threaten the entire city of El Fasher.” “Reports of escalating clashes in the city are deeply disturbing.”
He added: “The people of Darfur need more food, not more fighting.” The parties must fulfill their obligations to preserve the safety of civilians and stop the escalation immediately.”
There are reports of more than a thousand people fleeing from Darfur to Chad every day, 90% of whom say that the reason they left Sudan is the lack of food.
