PortSudan, Feb 29(Darfur 24)The United Nations announced that its mission in Sudan, UNTAMS, is completing its withdrawal from the country today, Thursday, while a small team remains in Port Sudan to supervise the task of liquidating the mission’s assets, starting in early March.
The United Nations spokesman said in a statement that the Secretary-General is counting on the full cooperation of the Sudanese authorities to ensure that this process is completed smoothly and as quickly as possible.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations called on both sides of the conflict in Sudan to lay down their weapons and commit to broad peace talks that would lead to the resumption of the democratic transition process under civilian leadership.
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric stressed in his statement that the organization will not leave Sudan and that it remains strongly committed to providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and supporting the Sudanese people in their aspirations for a future of peace and security.
The UN spokesman said that the ongoing conflict in Sudan further undermines the rule of law and the protection of civilians and threatens the entire country and the entire region.
He added that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Ramtane Lamamra, began his work in support of mediation efforts, in coordination and close partnership with African and international partners.
The statement said that these mediation efforts will support the essential work of the UN country team on the ground in Sudan, which will include providing life-saving humanitarian assistance. The statement stressed the importance of continuing international efforts in this field.
The Secretary-General called on the Sudanese authorities to continue their cooperation, including by facilitating the timely issuance of entry visas and ensuring unimpeded movement for United Nations staff and partners to provide much-needed support.
