Nairobi, December 13(Darfur 24)The Sudanese Sovereignty Council has reservations about the participation of Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in the IGAD summit scheduled to be held at the end of this week. At the same time, the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces confirmed his participation in the summit.
The Council said in a statement on its Facebook page that the Government of Sudan received an invitation from IGAD to attend a summit in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on January 18, 2024, to discuss the Somali problem and what is going on in Sudan.
The statement added that the government continued to deal positively with all initiatives, especially IGAD’s efforts to reach peace in Sudan. However, IGAD did not commit to implementing the outcomes of the last summit in Djibouti by meeting with the head of the Sovereignty Council and the leader of the rebellion, and did not provide a convincing justification for canceling the meeting that IGAD called for on December 28, 2024. Under the pretext that the rebel leader was unable to attend for technical reasons while he was touring a number of IGAD countries on the same date.
The statement explained that the Sudanese government believes that
There is no need to hold a summit to discuss Sudan before implementing the outcomes of the previous summit.
For his part, the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, confirmed his participation in the IGAD Summit in Uganda, and said in a statement on the X website:
I received an invitation from the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Organization for Development (IGAD) to attend and participate in the forty-second special session of the Council of Heads of Government of the IGAD States in Entebbe, Uganda.
He added, “In line with our firm position in support of a comprehensive peaceful solution, which ends once and for all the wars in Sudan in general, and the April 15 war in particular, I confirmed my acceptance of the invitation to attend and participate in the session.”
