Khartoum, May 10(Darfur24) Armed confrontations broke out on Wednesday, described as Al-Ashresh, since the start of the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in the middle of last month, as violent clashes took place in the Bahri area, north of Khartoum, between the infantry forces of the two sides of the conflict.
Witnesses said that the fighting escalated in the city of Bahri on Wednesday, amid fierce clashes and air strikes .
Residents spoke of confrontations on the ground in several neighborhoods in Khartoum between the two sides of the conflict, and an intense exchange of fire north of Omdurman and east of Bahri.
Since Tuesday, the army has been bombing targets in the three cities, in an attempt to drive away the Rapid Support Forces, which have taken control of large residential areas and strategic locations since the outbreak of the conflict on April 15.
The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis in Africa’s third-largest country, displacing more than 700,000 people within the country, and 150,000 fleeing to neighboring countries. It also sparked unrest in the western region of Darfur.
The United Nations World Food Program predicted on Wednesday that up to 2.5 million Sudanese could go hungry in the coming months due to the current conflict, bringing the number of severely food insecure people there to 19 million.
The army and Rapid Support Forces delegations have been holding meetings for days, under the auspices of the United States and Saudi Arabia, in the city of Jeddah.
The negotiations between the two sides aim to establish an actual truce and allow the arrival of aid workers and supplies after repeated declarations of a cease-fire failed to stop the fighting, which left millions trapped in their homes and areas.
