Khartoum, May 9(Darfur24) The US Ambassador to Sudan, John Godfrey, expressed his deep disappointment with the large-scale fighting that has caused massive civilian casualties and severe damage to basic infrastructure.
“A little more than four years ago, the Sudanese people took to the streets to demand freedom, peace and justice, and to establish a civil government for the benefit of all its people,” said the ambassador.
“The violent suppression of protests and the military takeover of power in 2021 did not silence the demands of the Sudanese people or shatter their democratic aspirations,” he added.
I am convinced that the current fighting will not diminish the courage of the Sudanese people or their commitment to the other either.”
Ambassador John said that the Sudanese people are not giving up their aspirations for civilian rule and neither will the United States.
He indicated that his country’s immediate priorities are to reach a permanent ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian assistance, and arrange other expanded negotiations to reach a permanent cessation of hostilities and transition to a civilian government.
He said that President Biden believes that although the United States has temporarily suspended embassy operations in Sudan, its commitment to the Sudanese people and the future they want for themselves has not ended yet.
He indicated that his country will continue to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people and support them in times of need.
