Khartoum, April 10(Darfur24) The Ministry of Agriculture said that the area of arable land in the Darfur region is about 55 million feddans, which is equivalent to a third of the arable land in Sudan.
The Acting Federal Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bushra, said in his speech before the first regional agricultural forum, on Sunday, that most of the agricultural lands in the country are cultivated by traditional means, as small farmers represent about 80% of the country’s farmers.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the Darfur Regional Government held the first regional agricultural forum for the five states of Darfur on Saturday in El Fasher, under the slogan “Agriculture for Peace”, with the aim of addressing the challenges facing the agricultural sector in the Darfur region and supporting sustainable development efforts.
Addressing the opening session of the forum, which will last for three, from 6-8 April, under the auspices of the governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi,the governor of North Darfur, Nimr Muhammad Abdel Rahman, mentioned that Sudan’s geographical and economic realities require it to rely on agriculture.
For her part, the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture in the state of North Darfur, Dr. Enaam Ismail Abdallah, stated that the agricultural activity in the Darfur region is based on the traditional rain-fed system, which is characterized by low levels of production and productivity due to fluctuating amounts of rain.
“The policy of the Ministry of Agriculture in the region is based on increasing production and productivity in order to achieve food security and self-sufficiency., on the one hand, and the lack of modernity of its mechanisms, on the other hand” concluded Enaam.
