El-geneina, October 24(Darfur24) The Council of Ministers of West Darfur State Government decided to impose fees on fuel imported to the state from neighboring Chad.
The markets of El Geneina city witnessed a large influx of fuel from Chad after its prices rose in Sudan following the government’s decisions to lift subsidies on petroleum derivatives in July of last year.
In the past, the border between Sudan and Chad witnessed a large movement of smuggling of fuel from Sudan to Chad and some neighboring countries, which the Sudanese government was unable to curb.
The Director-General of the Ministry of Education and Guidance, the official spokesman for the Council of Ministers in West Darfur, Zainab Teben Mohamed Nour, said that the decision to impose fees on fuel from Chad was taken after discussing the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Finance and Manpower in the state.
She added that the Council of Ministers decided to impose duties on fuel imported from Chad, amounting to 1,100 pounds per barrel.
There is no official statistics about the amount of fuel coming from Chad, as it enters through smuggling, and Darfur 24 correspondent in El Geneina said that there is a great demand for fuel from Chad, as the price of a barrel of gasoline has become 110,000 pounds, compared to 154,000 pounds per barrel in Sudanese markets.
