Khartoum, September 19(darfur24) The United Nations announced, on Monday, that the number of people affected by floods and torrential rains in Sudan has risen to about 300,000.
According to a report by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA and the humanitarian Aid commission HAC , monsoon rains and flash floods affected about 299,500 people in Sudan as of September 19.
The report, seen by Darfur24, added that rains and floods destroyed at least 17,600 homes and damaged 45,100 other homes in 16 out of 18 states.
The National Civil Defense Council reported that 129 people had been killed and 120 injured since the start of the rainy season in June
According to the report, the most affected states are Gedaref (64,685 people), Central Darfur (41747), White Nile (34357), South Darfur (30677) and Kassala (25,890). Other affected states are Northern state(18,046), West Darfur (17,354), River Nile (16,572), North Kordofan (15,235), Gezira (8,715), West Kordofan (6,030), South Kordofan (5,765), Sennar (5,379). and East Darfur (3650)
Reportedly, people have lost more than 4,100 head of livestock, and more than 12,100 acres (about 5,100 hectares) of farmland have been damaged by the floods, which will exacerbate the already alarming levels of food insecurity faced by people across the country.
The Sudan Emergency Response Plan for 2022 predicted that more than 460,000 people across the country will be affected by floods in 2022. .
In 2021, around 314,500 people were affected across Sudan, while between 2017 and 2021 an average of 388,600 people were affected annually.
The rainy season in Sudan usually begins in June and lasts until September, with peak rainfall and floods observed between August and September.
