El-Fashir, September 6(Darfur24) The World Food Program WFP said that the Darfur region of western Sudan is witnessing a significant increase in the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance, and that it will make an extra effort to provide the necessary assistance.
A delegation from the World Food Program , headed by the Regional Director of the Program in East Africa, Michael Dunford arrived in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on Monday, to assess the situation on the ground and familiarize itself with conditions of the needy people and the volume of humanitarian aid provided by WFP.
According to the North Darfur Governor’s Information Office, the head of the delegation, Michael Dunford, revealed a noticeable increase in the number of people in need of assistance in the state, and said that the visit comes within the framework of a field study on the overall situation in Darfur, and an evaluation of program activities in various fields, especially with regard to water, climate and other projects.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with North Darfur governor, Michael said WFP is aware of the challenges facing the Darfur region in the field of food and water, and that the program is working to solve these crises, noting that the risks of climate change and conflicts have made achieving food security a challenge for the whole world.
In statements after the meeting, the Wali of North Darfur, Nimr Abdel Rahman, said that his discussion with the World Food Program delegation focused on the UN agency’s work strategy in North Darfur .
He stated that the organization confirmed that it would make more effort to help the needy, and reiterated the government’s emphasis on coordination and cooperation in order to provide the necessary assistance to the needy, and demanded that they move from providing humanitarian aid to supporting sustainable development projects.
