Nyala, August 22(Darfur24) Internally Displaced people IDPs in South Darfur camps requested the visiting ICC prosecutor to conduct new investigations into the violations that the people of Darfur are still suffering from .
The head of the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, Yaqoub Muhammad Abdullah “Fawry,” said that the displaced and the victims of the war in Darfur are still facing violations, due to the lack of justice.
Faury added, “Delaying justice gives criminals a green light to persist in their crimes. We feel very sad when we see that Omar al-Bashir has not been brought to justice”.
While the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court ICC , Karim Assad Khan, said that his presence among the displaced in Darfur made him feel the responsibility of the Court and the international community he represents to achieve justice, and added: When I saw you, I realized the extent of the suffering and patience that you have faced over the past 17 years.
Khan stressed that the promise to achieve justice must be fulfilled, and that this will only be achieved with the cooperation of the displaced, the Sudanese government and the international community, and added: “You know that according to the mandate of the Criminal Court, handing over the wanted to the court falls on the shoulders of the Sudanese government”.
Commenting on the case of the accused, Ali Kushayb, Khan said, “We let the judges decide, and according to my analysis, the case is strong, but I have to be honest because the conviction requires more evidence, and this is what we are working for.”
He stated that the court heard 28 eyewitnesses and that about 130 others will be heard.
He continued: “In such a case, we cannot conduct investigations from a distance, so I am now seeking to establish an office for me in Khartoum, and I have asked the Wali of South Darfur to grant us all assistance so that members of the Public Prosecutor’s office can continue to reach the state”.
And he added, “We want to end this suffering, which lasted 17 years, and if we do not achieve justice in these allegations, we will live through nightmares of what we lived in the past.”
Upon his arrival in the city of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court met the state government and briefed them on the objectives of his two-day visit, which includes the Kalma camps in South Darfur, and Hamidiya and Hasahisa in Central Darfur.
Before leaving Kalma camp, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court stood on the graves of the 2008 massacre that killed more than 40 displaced people at the hands of government forces that attacked the camp.
