Nyala, August 19(Darfur24) The death toll from torrential rains and floods that swept through large parts of South Darfur state during July and August has risen to 22 people, including children.

 

Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Karam El-Din Adam Karam El-Din said in a special statement to Darfur 24 today, Friday, that the High Emergency Committee in Sudan declared South Darfur a disaster area.

 

He added that the Supreme Committee will hold an urgent meeting next Sunday to discuss how to provide relief to the affected people and provide shelter materials, describing the situation on the ground as catastrophic, which requires the necessity of precaution for health problems caused by the floods.

 

Over the past two weeks, floods and torrential rains hit  Umm Zaifa area in the locality of Id al-Fursan and large parts of the Kalma camp for the displaced in the locality of Bilil causing casualties , damaging properties and swamping homes.

 

Residents of the  town of Umm Darfouk, bordering the Central Africa Republic, had earlier called on the authorities to speed up their rescue for fear of drowning due to the collapse of a water dam in the area on Thursday.
