Zalingie, July 6(Darfur24) Police in the city of Zalingie in Central Darfur state arrested last week four young men, including two brothers, and pursued five others on charges of apostasy from Islam, and placed them in Zalingei prison.
Saif El-Din confirmed that the four young men were Christians who followed the religion of their mothers and were not apostates from the Islamic religion.
He stated that the police are still prosecuting five other young men on the same accusation, which prompted the young men to hide themselves.
The defense lawyer for the young men accused of apostasy said that the complaint was filed under No. 1356 in the Zalingei police, and the complainant is in the police under Article 126 of the Criminal Code.
The lawyer believes that the prosecution made a procedural mistake by filing a case of an article that was canceled in the year 2020 within several articles of the Criminal Code of 1991 AD, and according to the new change, Article 126 criminalizes blasphemy and wasting blood and not apostasy from religion
Darfur24 obtained the names of the arrested young men, namely Badruddin Harun Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Harun Abdul-Jabbar, Tariq Adam Abdullah and Mortada Ismail.
